How to Improve Your Resume Score Above 90 (Step by Step)
7/15/2026
Nine specific edits that lift most Indian resumes from a 60s ATS score to 90+. No template swap needed.
Why 90 is the target
An ATS score of 90+ means your resume passes automated filters and rewards a recruiter's 6-second skim with instant substance. Below 90, you compete with 500 other candidates for the same shortlist slot.
Step 1 — Fix parseability first
If your ATS score is below 60, formatting is the culprit. Convert two-column templates to one column. Remove tables, text boxes, images, icons and infographics. Re-export as a text-based PDF.
Step 2 — Rewrite your summary
A summary in 2026 must contain: (1) your role + years, (2) top 3 skills matching the JD, (3) one signature outcome with a number.
Example: Backend engineer, 5+ years across Node.js and PostgreSQL. Scaled API p95 latency from 850ms to 260ms serving 12M daily requests at a Series C fintech.
Step 3 — Every bullet must have a number
Impact = number. If none of your bullets have a percentage, absolute count, rupee/dollar value, or time saved, your resume looks like a job description. Add at least one number to each bullet.
Step 4 — Match keywords to the actual JD
Open the JD in one tab, your resume in another. For every hard skill, tool, and certification in the JD, ask: does my resume echo it? Aim for 65%+ coverage. Write both the acronym and the expansion (AWS + Amazon Web Services).
Step 5 — Remove the fluff
Delete: hobbies (unless directly relevant), "References available on request", "Passionate about..." openers, generic soft skills lists.
Step 6 — Tighten job titles
An internal title like "Growth Ninja" costs you keyword matches. Use the standard title in parentheses.
Step 7 — Fix dates + gaps
Consistent MMM YYYY – MMM YYYY format everywhere. Explain gaps of 6 months+ with one line.
Step 8 — Add a projects section
Freshers and career switchers score 15+ points higher with 2–3 well-described projects that mirror the target role.
Step 9 — Re-check and iterate
Re-check on Resume Truth. Each edit should push your score 3–8 points. Two rounds of iteration usually gets you to 90+.
